I chose to analyse ‘Within Temptation – Sinéad’ a short film I found on Youtube, Even though the short film doesn’t show who directed or was casted in Sinéad, we know the production company that made this short film happen, ‘Within Temptation’. In this film the genre is a thriller as in the beginning we begin at the end with a woman shooting an elderly man and a narrator, narrating over the top of all this, making the viewers wonder what has happened. The whole film is shot in black and white, which helps the audience believe that this has already happened. This is stereotypical of a thriller as it gives the audience two Hermeneutic codes as the first question is why did she shoot him and then at the end of the film there’s another question which leaves the audience wanting more as this old woman comes to a dead body in a room, touches it and every thing begins to shake violently and starts moving towards the dead body then the dead body gets up and walks out.
This is typical for a thriller as after one question is answered there’s another which the viewers are confronted with nearly right after the first question is answered, there is also something supernatural in this short film as a dead woman comes back alive.
The film was about an Irish woman who has been kicked out of her family as she has a problem of either drinking or with drugs (this motive is unclear), so she steals from her family for money to buy these things, she also had to abandon her little daughter with her father as she couldn’t take care of her. At the beginning we don’t know why we see her shooting her father but after the third minute we find out why, the narrator is the woman who shot her father, which also indicates to the viewers that this has happened in the past. After three years, since she shot her father, we are told that she was murdered, and we see a birds eye view of her body laying dead on a metal table, we then see this old woman in a wheelchair, the audience don’t see her face making it more mysterious but we do see her going up to the dead woman, she grabs the dead women’s leg, instantly the room starts to shake and the old woman suddenly vanishes, then the woman who had died gets up and leaves the room. There was no answer to why this old woman came and resurrected the dead woman, which leaves the audience wanting more.
The director uses a wide range of shots as at the beginning we have a close up on a gun falling to the floor with the camera following it to the floor next to the woman’s feet. There are shot reverse shot when the woman is having conversation with her dad, the director used tracking shots to follow the bullets hitting her father. When we see the room shake when the woman is dead, the director uses a bird’s eye view to show all the objects in the room shake and move slowly towards the dead body. The mise-en-scene is well thought out, as the people look middle class and in the infirmary looks believable as there are metal tables, equipment and there’s a dead body under a cloth, which makes us, believe it is the infirmary. The lighting is very dark and mysterious. The director didn’t use many special effect, the only effects are used to slow motion the bullets and showing the objects shaking and moving.
In all I think this short film is pretty good as the storyline is good but leaves too many questions for the audience to figure out, the mise-en-scene makes every thing look believable, the black and white mood makes every thing seem like its in the past and the narrator helps bring that to the audience.
